The International Baccalaureate Program:
is a comprehensive and integrated academic program for high school students in Hillsborough County.
is certified by the International Baccalaureate Office of North America.
requires oral and written examinations designed by an international board of examiners.
is recognized as meeting requirements for admissions to colleges and universities worldwide.
In order to qualify for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, students must take written examinations in six subject areas; document at least 200 hours of extracurricular and community service activity (CAS – Creative, Action, and Service hours); and write an Extended Essay. The diploma candidate must also take a unique course known as Theory of Knowledge. In this course, students investigate the knowledge, claims, and judgments made in logic, mathematics, natural and social sciences, history, ethics, and aesthetics.
Students earning the IB Diploma can be awarded advanced standing at prestigious universities around the world. Many colleges and universities recognize the IB Diploma for admissions or course credit. Candidates who do not earn the IB diploma can earn certificates that also grant college credit. In addition, all students participate in the Advanced Placement (AP) testing program. This is a second avenue for obtaining college credit.
Students enter the IB program at the beginning of their junior year of high school. Students enter a Pre-IB program in grades 9 and 10.
